Investigate the vibrational properties of a one-dimensional molecular solid made up from molecules consisting of two different atoms (such as carbon monoxide, C=0). The intra- molecular bond is much stronger than the link between adjacent molecules: ...C = 0...C = O...C = 0... i.e. their spring constants are very different.
