The recent advancements in technology and communication capabilities have transformed several industries. Several years of improved design & manufacturing has drastically reduced the size of silicon chips, enabling new and innovative uses of these chips. Combined with the communication capabilities, we now have interconnected devices that are now called the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT is a network of devices/objects that are connected to the internet and can collect and exchange data. IoT eliminates the manual collection of data to be sorted, analyzed, and made available via some mechanism to interested parties.
Automobiles have undergone massive transformations since their mass adoption in the early 20th century. IoT is permeating the trucking and fleet management industries as well. Traditionally, most fleets have been serviced at pre-planned or time-based intervals. These maintenance measures are carried out either too early or too late resulting in lost productivity, excessive costs, inefficient use of resources etc. Predictive maintenance is performed only when it becomes necessary based on vehicles conditions. There must be an indication of a safety issue or failure of a specific component. Data captured by IoT devices such as a telematics device, which is plugged into each vehicle in the fleet, continuously collects data from several components, actuators, and sensors on the vehicle. This data is uploaded in near real-time to a cloud platform storage. Big Data platforms can be leveraged for these purposes. It allows for large volumes of data to be processed using sophisticated algorithms and leveraging the compute-power of modern cloud architectures. Machine learning models can then be deployed to interpret the readings from various sensors of each vehicle to identify any potential threats or safety issues. Any identified information can be relayed to the central platform, the drivers' app, or sent to the maintenance center for more analysis and parts to be ordered in advance. The IoT devices can use several available channels for transmission of data in near real-time to the cloud platform. These include efficient use of 4G/5G communication channels, satellite-based uplink/downlink of data, a combination of telecommunication channels and satellites. There are several benefits of using IoT devices in predictive maintenance of fleets. These include reduced maintenance costs, enhanced fleet utilization, optimizing driver and fleet uptime, extended fleet life, improved safety, overall cost optimization, etc.
