FORMAT/COMPONENTS OF A RESEARCH PROPOSAL 1. INTRODUCTION a. Background to the study Before describing the background, begin with a short introduction that presents the problem under study, why the problem is important, how the study relates to previous work, and the practical and theoretical implications of the study (less than a page) Now describe the context in which the problem occurs (historical, political theoretical, industrial, technological, ete) for the readers to put the problem into context. b. Problem statement Point out existing knowledge gaps, controversies to be resolved, what previous research has not been able to resolve etc. Use statistics to support the issues, if possible. c. Objective Set SMART objectives d. Hypothesis/questions Align your questions/hypothesis with your objectives e. Significance of the study Point out how the results will be used, who will benefit and how they will benefit from the results. f. Delimitation of the work Define the scope of the work eg geographical area, variables etc g. Limitations of the study Point out the methodological weaknesses of your research design and how they might affect the results h. Definition of terms: Define variables and terms as you used them in the context of your study i. Organisation of the Study: Briefly describe what goes into the various chapters of your work 2. LITERATURE REVIEW Provide the theoretical or conceptual basis of the study. Describe, summarise, synthesise and critique the empirical literature. Summarise and clearly explain the gap to be filled with the current (your) study. 3. METHODOLOGY Research design Study area Population Sampling procedure Data collection instrument Data collection procedure Data processing and analysis Summarise the chapter 4. REFERENCES (use APA format)
