Medical tourism is on the rise, because of the lower cost of having procedures conducted in other countries. These lower costs procedures can run the risk of higher complications. For a medical tourism business, it is important that they have strong ethics and are willing to take tough stances when necessary. Having a code of conduct that the organization and their patients follow is important. Due to varying laws and regulations on medical procedures across the world, ensuring a safe outcome relies on the individuals having a strong sense of ethics and a willingness to want to do what is right. Imagine going to a medical facility that has a doctor who has no experience, your patient is unfamiliar with the country, but they want to go to this doctor because he is the cheapest. What is the ethical decision here. It would most likely to advise the patient that this is not the best doctor and lay the reasons out.

Medical tourism is becoming a big topic and an option for people to seek out medical care globally, instead of sticking to the at home options of care. Personally when our son needed open heart surgery, we had to choose between San Francisco and Las Vegas for the surgery because of a lack of local talent. It was a difficult choice, in the moment, because we wanted the best care for our child (at 18 months) and we wanted the support of our existing care team. The cost, at the time, wasnt as important as the quality of care. While researching this topic, I found a Medical Tourism Quality Alliance website that provided interesting perspective on medical tourism. This site also provides a detailed list of tourism friendly places to go, allows membership, and provides background for places around the world (Medical Tourism Quality Alliance, n.d.). I had no idea that there was such an established market for medical tourism. My nave background only registered pharmaceuticals that are much cheaper in other countries than here in the United States.

Costa Rica is known for its natural beauty, healing blue waters, and it has three acclaimed hospitals for medical treatment (Bristow, et.al., 2011). This makes Costa Rica a candidate for medical tourism. For uninsured or underinsured people, the option for lower cost medical care is enticing and can be justified when including the costs associated to travel (Bristow, et.al., 2011). I know that recently my child spent an unexpected night in the emergency room, and our total statement for treatment was almost $12k! Our portion is right around $1k, but that is still a substantial amount of money for our young family to pay. I couldnt imagine having to be responsible for the total $12k for that night. (Thankfully, he is fine and did not have to have surgery.)
