Technology advances have driven cross-border globalization faster than people imagined. It has spread to various countries through many channels, which helps to promote innovation and productivity. The advantages of technology are a) growth of multinational companies, b) mobile banking c) several social media platforms and apps d) each country building on technology enabling it to have more discoveries in science, and e) reducing poverty. Technology gave birth to the internet and it has advanced so much that it has helped people communicate, meet their loved ones, spawn diverse communities, build on online education, etc. Technology and science have always been intertwined. Each generation uses technology in its own way. There are Baby boomers, Gen X, Gen Y, and Gen Z. Generation Z are the ones who got the opportunity to first use a smartphone and its various social media apps.

There has been a rapid growth in these social media platforms and the growth has come across all demographic groups (Pew Research Center, March 27th, 2018). Social media helps people stay in touch with family and friends, reconnect with old acquaintances, and for teenagers, it is important for their friendships, romantic relationships, and more. Every person shares their personal information when starting their profile on social media platforms. This event means a huge amount of data of hundreds of people are accessible online. This is really an ethical issue where enough privacy on social media is a real problem. (Pew Research Center, March 27th, 2018).

More than 50% of people like to keep their social media in private mode so that they can have control over who can see their content. (Forbes, Peter Suciu, June 26th, 2020). The most interesting and largest cyber attacks and data breaches happened in 2019. Personal information of all people, ranging from emails, and account credentials were partially leaked by a social media marketing company Preen. Me. This caused a large number of social media users to fully expose their information via deep web hacking forums, putting people at risk of being targeted by scammers. This leak was discovered by an actor, and as he mentioned, it was beached by Preen. as they used a deep web hacking platform to get peoples personal information. Breech involved peoples passwords, credit card information, and other financial details (Forbes, Peter Suciu, June 26th, 2020). This fact has led to ethical violations and breaches of confidentiality.

Even before the pandemic, organizations began to conduct international business thanks to the technology that made global expansion possible. While global expansion has its benefits, it also comes with a new set of global risks.

The environmental global risk area is an issue important to me, so I chose this topic for out week 6 discussion post. Its one thing to be aware of what environmental issues are such as extreme weather events or catastrophes, but its another to witness and understand how these disasters affect business. For example, overseas suppliers may be unable to deliver goods or services due to climate change events in their country causing customers to take their business elsewhere (Manage Environmental Risks, n.d.).

In March 2021, the Suez Canal, one of the worlds most important trading routes, was blocked for six days by a container ship that ended up wedged across the waterway by strong winds. This had a severe economic impact. Of course shipping delays were experienced by customers, but a lot of money was lost as well. The mega-container vessel, Ever Given in the Suez Canal, is holding up an estimated $400 million an hour in trade, based on the approximate value of goods that are moved through the Suez every day, according to shipping data and news company Lloyds List (LaRocco, 2021). Inventory was also impacted. The delay also impacted the arrival of U.S. imports that fill store shelves as well as U.S. manufacturing components (LaRocco, 2021).
