From my experience, some practices or attitudes that will indicate that a team member is experiencing discrimination and/or prejudice from their own team members is the exclusion from the majority. This can take place either day-to-day operations or someone being excluded from certain work center things such as awards, shifts, or promotions. There would be a bias of certain personnel or groups within an organization. According to Levi & Askay, implicit bias occurs when personnel may not be aware of their own actions and can affect their decisions, preferences, and behaviors. Regarding practices or attitudes a team may face when an external party is experiencing discrimination from the team or team members, the performance levels will be affected. I believe that a team who accepts personal views, beliefs, and contributions to the mission will aid awareness to any implicit negative biases that may be exhibited within the team or external parties involved. Personnel have different experiences based on their background and education. If a team can accept the contributions of fellow team members or outside organizations, the goals established can be reached more successfully without resistance and bias.

Several indications a team member is experiencing discrimination is exclusion of that member from discussions and decisions, exclusion of the member from activities, and exclusion from team communications. Team members may show discomfort around an individual, may make off hand comments, or may be completely rude to the individual. Team members may have implicit biases they are not fully aware of that make another team member uncomfortable or marginalized (Levi and Askay, 2021). An example of an implicit bias would be age discrimination, where younger members of a team may feel older members have less to offer if they are developing new technologies or processes. Another example of implicit bias is the wave of discrimination Muslim Americans received after the September 11th terrorist attacks. The sentiment toward Muslim Americans turned negative because of the use of the term Islamic terrorists. Unfortunately, this extended throughout our nation and affected other minorities such as Sikhs and individuals perceived to be of Middle Eastern descent.

Explain what practices or attitudes exhibited within a team may indicate that an external party is experiencing discrimination and/or prejudice from the team or team members.

Like individual discrimination and prejudice, teams can display these attitudes toward people outside of their group. Certain demographics may not be considered when groups conduct research, information may be withheld from individual or groups the team has bias against, or members may neglect pertinent data based on its origin. These biases are generally unconscious, but in certain situations, may be intentional. For example, a team may choose to ignore data from groups, cultures, or nations because they feel the researchers are not as qualified as groups with whom they are familiar.
