Justice is blind because the judicial process is ideally structured to focus on facts, legal principles, and fair application of the law rather than personal traits such as race, wealth, social status, or political influence. The courts help prevent violations of constitutional rights through procedural safeguards such as the right to lawyer, trial by jury, due process, and the exclusionary rule, which helps to prevent violations of constitutional rights (Ma, 2012). Similarly, scholars emphasize that the structure of democratic judicial systems whether through the American model of adversarial trial, Japan's lay judge involvement, or comparative models around the world aims at reducing bias and ensuring that justice is applied equally (Reichel & Suzuki, 2015; Hsieh & Boateng, 2015)
