Joyous Eaters Restaurant, simply called Eaters, was established in Mbeya in 2000 as an outdoor catering facility. It is located at Mafiati, the junction of of three main roads, the Airport road, the Dar-Zambia highway and Lumumba road. Joyce Twigane, the proprietor came across the idea of the restaurant while on a study visit to Gothenburg in Sweden where similar facilities such as Fish Church, Silver Plates, Kock & Vin, and Jallajalla, could be found along the Gta Canal. This experience inspired Joyce, who felt challenged to do something hence the establishment of Joyous Eaters. Eaters caters for a cross-section of customers, locals and tourists, families and couples or solos and regulars and first timers. The site at which the Eaters was built was illegally used by people from its neighbourhood as more a garbage disposal ground. In short, it was an eyesore to any civilized community, as it did not meet any health standards. To those who knew the place the creation of Eaters was a commendable development. The way it was built and decorated the Eaters added to the beautification of not only Mafiati but also the neighbourhood of the city centre. MS607: Strategic Management Page 2 Strategic Issues As stated earlier, Eaters operates in a suburb that is comprised of two three-star hotels and there are more than four restaurants that are in the same category as Eaters restaurant. Two three-star hotels are on the south separated from Eaters by the Zambia Highway. Apart from the three-star hotels, there are several other hotels that serve food within a radius of a hundred meters. For the hotels, Eaters has the advantage of flexibility in terms of responding to customer requirements. This is in terms of times of operations and service offering without added costs and the fact that there is free air for customers as all fitted in the restaurant's environment. Customers of the four-star hotels by their status and standards, find Eaters a convenient option for their dining needs. At the four-star hotels, the majority of customers are only paying for bed and breakfast. They patronise the likes of Eaters for eateries and other types of pastimes For the facilities in the same category as Eaters, there is nothing more as a marked advantage than the quality of services offered as determined by the patrons. Eaters restaurant has a unique feature of having its services provided in the open, a factor that remained in its favour. The majority of similar restaurants in the City cannot have host live performances or even resident bands mainly due to lack of space. Eaters, on the other hand, has resident band and an ample space which can easily be converted into a dancing floor. It is unfortunate that the majority of customers have been complaining about the monotony of the resident band's performance. This activity brings in additional revenues besides the food and other services. However, Eaters restaurant does not cater for accommodation provision of accommodation which would otherwise add in more revenue. The majority of its patrons are residents of Mbeya who in most cases would retire to their homes. However, some would wish to spend out.
