Klink won a contest sponsored by a sporting goods store, entitling him to play in a night-time golf tournament. He signed a form releasing the store from any liability connected with the tournament. The golf tournament was held at the Dusky Meadows Country Club, beginning at 10:30pm. Because he was late for the start of the tournament, he quickly parked his car in the parking lot and grabbed his golfing gear. As he hurried down the path to the golf course, he ran into one of a series of black iron posts embedded in the asphalt path.
