Knowledge Discovery in Databases
The assignment is designed to give the students an opportunity to explore real-world data
mining applications, issues and challenges in a chosen field by writing a review of scholarly
research papers.
Assignment 1
This assignment is to be done individually.
You are required to identify and summarize two journal articles in a chosen field (for
example, medicine, social sciences, economics, IT, etc).
Both articles must be from the same field, however, the data mining methods (or
applications) being used must be different in the two papers.
It's not necessary for you to have learnt the methods so far in this course, you can choose
any interesting method, even the ones that we are yet to learn in this course.
In your review, your main aim is to state the topic, identify what is being investigated
(including the data) and how it is being achieved, i.e., provide a review of the data mining
application(s) or method(s), how it has been implemented (software choice), and discuss
how the findings answer the research question(s).
You can discuss about anything else that is interesting enough for you to include in your
write-up including any issues and challenges. Discuss, with examples, where you could
potentially adopt such a method to help you investigate your own research question(s),
which could be from any field.
You are required to do this for the two papers separately, write it up using a maximum of 6
pages (3 pages/paper).
Also place the reviewed sample papers with reference.
Marks will be awarded according to the marking rubric.
