Learning Objectives:

This Lab is designed to give you the tools and knowledge to identify and analyze the Wireless Network hotspots and Broadcast Ids in your local vicinity, or at any other address listed in the U.S.

Getting Down to Business

Step 1: Using your Internet Browser, type in the address WIGLE.net (one G) and hit enter.

Step 2: Using the Search bar in the center of the WIGLE page, type in your address, (or the known

address of a local business or neighbor, if you have privacy concerns). You could also use

Columbus States address, as we have done in this example:

The "latitude" of a point on the Earth's surface is the angle between the equatorial plane and an imaginary straight line that passes through that point and through the center of the Earth. Lines joining points of the same latitude trace circles along the surface of Earth called parallels, because they are parallel to the Equator and to each other. For example, the 38th parallel North formed the border between North and South Korea just prior to the Korean War.

The North Pole is 90 N; the South Pole is 90 S. The 0 parallel of latitude is designated the Equator, the fundamental plane of almost all geographic coordinate systems.

According to the website www.findlatitudeandlongitude.com the address Latitude N 40 0' and Longitude W 83 0' is somewhere near the corner of North High Street, and West 15^th Avenue, in Columbus Ohio. (Actually, a Sorority house between North High Street and Summit St. on 15^th Ave).

It is important to know your Latitude coordinates North or South of the Equator when installing Solar Power Generating Systems,, as the Maximum Average Solar Radiation Power can be achieved by angling your fixed panel or roof installations so they are at the same angle from the Earths surface, as your locations latitude coordinates, thereby exposing the panels surface to the most direct Sun light during the day:

The "longitude" of a point on Earth's surface is the angle east or west of a reference meridian to another meridian that passes through that point. All meridians are halves of great ellipses, often called Great Circles, which converge at the North and South Poles. The meridian of the British Royal Observatory in Greenwich, South-East London, England, is the international Prime Meridian.

In early Maritime or land navigation, a ships position to the East or West could be determined by setting the ships Master Clock to GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) then calculating the minutes out by comparing the clock to the time of the Suns equinox at noon, if the weather would permit. Since the Earth rotates every 24 hours, each degree of rotation would be 24 hrs. x 60 mins / 360 degrees, or 4 minutes for every degree of travel away from the Prime Meridian.

Step 3: From the WIGLE map, locate 8 SSIDs (Broadcast Ids) in your vicinity, and list them below:

Question 2: How many of these SSIDs look like they may have been modified from the default setting, by changing the Broadcast name? (e.g. SBUX, McDonalds, Brandons Wifi, etc.) ____.

Remember from your studies we learned the first step in securing your Wifi installation is to change the name of, or turn off your Broadcast SSID, and to change your setup password from the factory default settings. It becomes immediately apparent from our findings that not everyone who has installed a wireless access point is taking their network security seriously, or possibly they dont know how to change their equipment over from the factory default settings.
