Learning outcome - Identify and to critically discuss issues that arise in an employment relationship from the perspective of utilitarianism, Kantian deontology, justice, and rights (study unit 7) Read the following case study and then answer the questions that follow: Selection and appointment challenges The daughter of a high-profile politician was assumed to have done well in the interview at least by scoring members of the interview committee, but the union representatives who were part of the interview committee were not happy. Although she was certified as being the best by some interview committee members, the unions remained adamant that they could not understand how she got to be scored as the best because according to them, she was not the best. The union members in their stance against her appointment posited that the candidate seemed to fail to have a clear knowledge of the work in the inclusive education unit even though she had already acted in the position for at least one and a half years. After many disagreements and discussions, a compromise was reached that she would be allowed to take the position of director of inclusive education at the Department of Basic Education, but after the vetting of her qualifications. To the amazement of the interview committee, their favourite candidate's qualifications were found to be fraudulent. The candidate's CV's showed that she had passed a BED, a BEDHONS, an MED, and a DED, but according to the records of the university she claimed to have studied at, she had passed and graduated with an MED and a DED but without passing a junior and an honours degree. These findings were a shock also to the university itself as it exposed corruption in terms of their admissions. The university admissions office advised the interview committee not to disclose this matter to anyone, as it would destroy their reputation and would also have a negative impact on the name of a high-profile politician who is the mother of the preferred candidate. After much consideration, the interview committee decided to appoint the candidate to ensure that the candidate is not exposed, as her exposure would destroy the reputation of a lot of people and the university itself.
