Legislation & Safety precautions Scenario: You work as an operations supervisor for a large manufacturing company. New large-scale high pressure electro-pneumatic and hydraulic plant and equipment has been installed and commissioned in your place of work, replacing old, outdated equipment. With a view to continued safe operation and regular safety examination requirements, your manager has asked you to research and prepare a safety pack to be given to all operators and maintenance personnel. The pneumatic plant and equipment in corporate large pressure storage vessels, 3 metres tall and 2 metres in diameter, with access panels on the top (see photo). These vessels will require internal inspection at times. The hydraulic plant and equipment have large, heavy, and awkward components that will require removal and overhaul at regular intervals. The normal system operating pressure for this equipment is 200 bar (approx. 2900 psi) Task 1: The safety pack you produce should consist of two main sections as described below: a) List relevant aspects of Health and safety legislation and regulations that will apply when working with the new plant and equipment. You are to summarise any responsibilities/duties of the employer/owner and the employees and cover key areas of legislation - of which a minimum of 3 must be specific to fluid power equipment (guide length is 500 - 750 words). b) Describe relevant safety precautions that will be required when working with the new plant and equipment during operation, maintenance, and examination. You are to state why these safety precautions are necessary, and identify the hazards and risks involved (guide length is 750 words).
