Let (X1,X2) follow the Multinomial distribution M(N,p1,p2,p3)

using the expression of the probability desnsity function of the multinomial, compute E(X1) E(X1*X2) and cov(X1,X2)

I know how to do it via moment generating function but the problem is asking to solve it WITH probability density function.. so I am guessing E(X1)= Summation(X1*(a1+a2+a3)^n) or something like that? could you please help?
