Question:
let's talk about the obstacles to critical thinking that we face. There are 5 of these in the Objective 21 Critical Elements. They are:
Avoid egocentric thinking,
Be aware of your social conditioning,
Identify outliers,
Avoid normalization, and
Respect your emotions.
What I think would be a good mental exercise for you is to RANK these in the order that you think these occur. For example, you would rank "Respect your emotions" FIRST if you think that the greatest number of critical thinking obstacles come from people relying on their emotions to make a judgment on a topic. I know someone who is thoroughly convinced that earth is only 6,000 years old in spite of all the scientific data and research that shows earth is billions of years old. He believes this because of his religious/emotional beliefs.
Please don't think you have to rank "Respect your emotions" first since this is just an example. There are a LOT of people out there who have oversized egos and think that their every thought is perfect but . . . . . we all know that's not true, don't we?
After you have ranked the critical thinking obstacles 1-5, then briefly explain to us WHY you ranked those obstacles in the way you did. So the two parts of this DQ are 1) rank the CT Obstacles and 2) explain the reasoning behind your ranking order.
