Team or Group Development: The Development of Dyadic Relationships

Abstract

A team or group is a collection of diversely competent individuals who understand the role and responsibilities of the team dynamic. The goal of this study, group development is to provide an important perspective on what a group is made of. It is a point of view shared by certain sociologists who perceive groups and some psychologists who only see individuals. This study aims to determine our understanding of human behavior in teams or groups. In this context, psychological distance is defined as a concept which designates the degree of intimacy or emotional closeness, which characterizes an interpersonal relationship.

The frequency of responses on the sociometric scale and the congruence scale responses were tested as hypotheses. The study subjects were students from all in their junior or senior years. Individuals were matched with one another and asked how close they felt to each other when working as a group. The results show that in sociometric as groups encounter increases the psychological distance will decrease and incongruence scale as groups encounters increases the psychological distance will increase.

Research results:

According to the article, Team or Group Development by Donald Ralph Kingdon, both hypotheses result in the same direction as stated. During the test, the subjects were unable to interact with and comprehend one another. Succeeding the second test, participants began openly discussing their personal opinions with one another. For instance, the participants provided their feedback. In the sociometric scale test, one of the participants said, "The basis for my change in closeness was a commonality. As I have communicated with others, I have found common ground." This remark clearly demonstrates that the extremes of psychological closeness and distance were beginning to diminish. The subject responded on the congruence scale test, "I felt very remote from subject Y but that was before we discovered we were both twins." According to their responses, participants felt acceptance of all members of the group. They formed positive relationships with other members and shared their ideas. Individual members of a team discover their personal potential, obligations, and how to work collaboratively dynamically while working as a team or group.
