Question:
Just like business managers, many of us make, or help other make decisions every day in our private lives. We sometimes make longer term decisions such as: Am I going to buy a car? Where am I going to go to college? Should I take out student loans? And so on.
In order to do that you need financial information such as how long is it going to take for me to pay off those loans? What's my rate of return? What is the cost/benefit if I go to a small state school versus a private school? These are the kind of decisions that we make as individuals.
Scenario:
You have just been asked by a close family friend to speak to their 18-year-old about selecting a public school ($80,000) or a private school ($180,000). In either case, the 18-year-old will be using student loans to pay for school tuition, books, fees and housing.
Provide a set of talking points (minimum of 5 sentences/bullets), in the order of discussion, that you would create as your notes for counseling the 18-year-old.
Go you and find an episode of Shark Tank, the TV show. Watch an episode and choose one of the pitches and use the following outline for your post:
- What product did you select? Briefly describe this product.
- How much were they asking for, and what percent of the company is this? What is the company's total valuation?
- What does the product cost to make and what does it sell for? What is the gross profit margin? (net profit/sales)
- Did the company get funded? Do you agree with the shark's decision?
- If the company did not get funded, what do you think the entrepreneurs need to do to change their business to be successful?
- How much of your response in #5 is driven by product costs.
- Do a little research and find an update on what the company is doing now.
