Popular books on organizational behavior often have cute titles and are a fun to read, but they make the job of managing people seem much simpler than it is. the majority are based on the author's views, rather than in-depth research and it is doubtful that the Experience of one person translates into practice and effective management for all. Why lose the
time reading this that, with a little effort, we can access the knowledge produced from of thousands of scientific studies on human behavior in organizations? the behavior is a complex issue. Few, if any, simple statements about the Human behaviors are generalizable to all people in all situations. you really try to apply the leadership knowledge you gained from a book about Geronimo or Tony to the management of software engineers in the XXI century?
Point against
Organizations are always on the lookout for leaders and managers and the manager-copycat is continually looking for ways to improve their leadership skills. Editors respond to
this demand offers hundreds of degrees that promise knowledge about people management. Books like these can provide people with management secrets that others know.
On the other hand, isn't it better than learning about managing people in the trenches, to difference from the last esoteric reflections of the "ivory tower"? Many more ideas
important that we get from life are not necessarily the result of research studies empirically careful. Perhaps they are the result of experiences in the trenches.
It's true that there are some bad books. But, do they outnumber published esoteric studies yearly? For example, several recent behavioral and organizational studies were
published in 2011, with the following titles:
Training for Fostering Knowledge Co-Construction from Collaborative Inference-Drawing
The Factor Structure and Cross-Test Convergence of the Mayer–Salovey–Caruso Model of Emotional Intelligence
Refining Value-Based Differentiation in Business Relationships: A Study of the Higher Order Relationship Building Blocks That Influence Behavioural Intentions
A Dialogical Approach to the Creation of New Knowledge in Organizations We're not talking about making fun of these studies. Rather, our point is that you can't judge a
book by its cover more than a research study can do by its title. There is no single right way to learn the science and art of people management in Organizations. The most enlightened managers are those who gather ideas from various sources: their own experience, research results, observations of others, and, yes, business books
written too. If a great management were produced by carefully closing the results of research studies, academics would be the best managers. How often do you see that?
Research and academics have an important role to play in understanding effective management. But it's not fair to condemn all business books, citing the worst (or, at least,
the ones that sound worse).
