"The constitutional right to bear arms in public for self$-$defense is not 'a second$-$class right, subject to an entirely different body of rules than the other Bill of Rights guarantees,$\text{'}"$ Justice Clarence Thomas wrote in the Bruen opinion joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett.

The framers of the Constitution reviewed history and noted governments over time throughout the world kept their power by disarming the governed. As a result, they crafted the Second Amendment to give the people a chance to defend against an over$-$opressive and totalitarian government.

Here is the text of the Second Amendment: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."
