PhET Simulation: Circuit Construction Kit-DC Virtual Lab - Kirchhoff's Rules

Instructions

  • Before you start to work on this worksheet, review the M10 Laboratory Report 9 Instructions
  • Submit completed work to the M10 Laboratory Report 9 dropbox. See the Schedule and Course Rubrics in the Syllabus Module for due dates and grading information.

Objectives:

1. Build and analyze complex circuits.

2. Investigate Kirchhoff's Current Rule.

3. Investigate Kirchhoff's Voltage Rule.

4. Measure the currents and voltages in circuits.

  1. Open the simulation using the link to PhET Interactive Simulations at the University of Colorado Boulder:

PhET Interactive Simulations

  1. Explore the options available in the simulator (see screenshot below). In this lab activity you will be using the elements on the left side and the measuring tools voltmeter and ammeter from the right-side toolbox.
  2. Drag the elements on the screen and adjust their values. Explore how the wire can be extended and how to connect the elements in your circuit with the wire.
  3. Choose conventional current in the upper right corner to visualize the direction of the current after you build your circuit.
