Major Design Project
Problem
[100 Marks]
Design a transmission shaft, 1.8 m long, for a wind turbine mechanical system that
transmits power from wind blades system to a Permanent Magnet Generator of
specifications given in Table 1. The shaft must be designed to withstand applied
loading and ensure reliable operation, with the angle of twist less or equal to 1 degree,
over its intended lifespan of 20 years.

Determine loading on the shaft
Determine the plane stresses magnitudes and directions
Draw a Mohr's circle of the situation
Explain and determine principal stresses and their directions
Determine the suitable solid shaft diameter under the condition and given
material grade
Calculate the inner diameter (assuming that the outer diameter is equal to the
calculated in sub-question 5.) of a hollow shaft under the condition and given
material grade if the thickness t=12mm. What is the gain in weight?
Determine the factor of safety if you consider Tresca failure theory
Determine the factor of safety if you consider Von Mises failure theory
Determine the critical rotation speed in case of a solid shaft and if you consider
the hollow shaft.
Prepare a comprehensive report documenting the design process, calculations,
drawings, and analysis results (6 pages maximum).
All other necessary parameters assume generic vatues and for your shaft determined
dimensions, select standard sizes.
Please provide detailed answers with clear calculations
