Gender Issues

Some of the gender-related issues include sex, formation of identity, gender identity spectrum, and gender roles. Gender is defined as how a person perceives themselves as a man, woman, transgender, or non-binary person. Sex, on the other hand, is the maleness or femaleness of a person, as shown by the person's physical attributes. There are main factors in biology that have been identified to influence the gender identity of a person. These biological levels interact with each other to determine the biological sex of a person, and disparities occur, which leads to differences in sexual development.

According to the social learning theory, the formation of gender identity results from identifying an individual as having feminine or masculine roles, which results mainly from social and cultural models and influences that people are exposed to (Crooks et al., 2021). Reinforcement of appropriate gender behavior and imitation of gender roles leads to the formation of gender identity. Gender identity, through a spectrum, defines gender diversity as a general term referring to flexibility in gender roles. Transgender describes people whose gender identities are not consistentwith the sex that they were born. Even though civil rights and recognition in society are improving for transgender people, significant stress and challenges remain.

In conclusion, gender stereotyping in society encourages prejudgment of others and limitation of opportunities. Socialization in gender roles is conveyed in books, schools, parents, religion, and the media. The expectation of gender roles in society can greatly affect the sexuality of people. This is because our view of gender roles greatly influences how a person assesses their sexuality, expectations for intimate relationships, and how we respond to the sexuality of others.
