Net neutrality refers to a policy that states that internet service providers must ensure that all content on the internet, regardless of the source, must be delivered at the same speed. This means that internet service providers or ISPs can't take content that users interact with, such as websites, and pay special treatment of any kind. Faster or slower loading speeds are prohibited. In other words, If theres no net neutrality, internet service providers can discriminate against websites or services and regulate what users can and cant see(Nakutaviit, 2022). This is a policy that exists to give internet users the best experience they can when they are online. However, there are arguments both for and against net neutrality.

From an ISPs point of view, the infrastructure to support the network traffic that occurs online is very expensive. ISPs are the ones that have to invest time and money in laying down the foundation for online traffic to operate smoothly. With the ever growing nature of the internet, this means that ISPs will forever be investing money into upgrading/expanding the infrastructure. ISPs feel that because they are the ones investing capital in order for online services to run smoothly, they should have the right to charge websites for faster connection speeds if they want them. If an ISP has to give everyone the same speed no matter the source, this can put strain on an ISP. Another negative viewpoint ISPs have towards net neutrality is that it makes illicit content easier to assess for the general public. It is stated in an article that Removing net neutrality makes it easier for ISPs to filter dangerous content(Nakutaviit, 2022). This would mean that ISPs can create filters that block out websites that host illicit things.

For a more positive outlook on net neutrality, we can look at it from an e-commerce point of view, more specifically, a small business. With a small business, having net neutrality levels the playing field with larger corporations. It is stated online that an open internet ensures that larger companies don't have yet another advantage over a tiny startup. It's a level playing field on the internet, where everything is delivered as fast as possible to the end user (Shepherd, 2022). Another clear positive outlook on net neutrality by small businesses is the unrestrained access to the websites that smaller businesses own. There will never be the fear that just because a business is small, that users accessing the small business services will be getting a lower quality service.

In my opinion, I'm more on the side of pro net neutrality. I believe that the user experience must strive to be the best that it can be naturally, without the need to purchase a faster experience. Giving all organizations a level playing field gives everyone a fair chance at user experience, and doesn't push out smaller organizations. Smaller businesses often struggle with funds, so forcing them to pay for faster service may very well hinder some businesses from ever growing. This can also have the effect of halting innovation.
