After many unethical practices of companies in the past, ethics has come to the forefront of many companies in the world. Everyone has experienced some type of unethical behavior in the workplace no matter where they work. I have experienced it at multiple different jobs that I have worked at in the past and where I currently work. One of the most common experiences of misconduct or unethical practices in the workplace is the favoritism of certain employees by management. In my last job, I also experienced seeing management favorite certain employees. These employees were able to break policy over and over without being reprimanded by the supervisors. Breaking this policy is not only unethical, it is also dangerous. I worked for a law enforcement agency, so ethics and safety are very important. Another example of misconduct that I have experienced in my own career is at my current job. This certain unethical practice was enacted by management by accepting inappropriate gifts from clients after helping them. There is a policy written that refers to accepting gifts from clients, and that the value of the gift should not exceed a certain dollar amount. This gift exceeded this amount but was still accepted by management. Ethical misconduct is very common and has been experienced by many people regardless of where they work.
Ethics in the workplace is one of the most important things. Ethics involves moral issues and choices and deals with right and wrong behavior (Luthans et al., 2021). After many ethical misdoings in the past, it is very important to focus on ethical practices in businesses today. One thing that may be done by businesses to address ethical issues and promote an ethical culture is to introduce a policy. According to an article by Texas A&M University Corpus Christi, Most large companies enforce codes of ethics that clearly state the definition of, and the punishment for, employee misconduct. These documents provide information about a companys mission statement and philosophy, and they define the standard to which employees must hold themselves (How to address ethical issues in the Workplace 2021). It is important for the company to clearly state their expectations of the employees so there is no confusion. Employees will not be able to have ethical practices until they completely understand ethics and understand what is expected of them. Another recommendation to address ethical issues and promote ethical culture in the workplace is to employ a confidential system for the employees. Many employees may be hesitant to report on their fellow coworkers or their upper-level management. Many may worry of the possible repercussions were they to do this. To alleviate this issue, managers should set up a confidential system for reporting ethical violations. Similarly, managers should handle discipline confidentially to protect the privacy of those they need to confront (How to address ethical issues in the Workplace 2021). At Lockheed Martin, they have set up a certain ethics hotline for employees to call into should they need to report any unethical practices by their coworkers or supervisors. This makes it easier for them and makes them more willing to report misconduct knowing it can be anonymous. Good ethics is good for the business and helps it grow and stay successful. It is important to implement these practices in every corporation.
