Make a simple response to this discussion:It is estimated that 41% of the Sub-Saharan African population lives in extreme poverty, leading to a very low life expectancy. There are many different reasons why the African continent has faced poverty. One environmental reason is how infertile the soil is and how little rainfall they get. As well as very extreme tropical diseases that can lead to underdevelopment. Another reason why the Sub-Saharan African region might still have a struggling economy is the slave trade. Many European countries were focused on mining and agriculture which fueled slavery and stopped any African development. In the 1970's African countries relied heavily on importing food and minerals which led to very high prices for items essential to everyday life. Another reason why Africa might have struggled was the growth of nationalism in order to rely less and less on colonial powers. In the 1980's they tried to build steel mills to try and fuel the continent but they were not able to compete with European industry. Another major aspect of Africas struggling economy is the corruption in their governemnt. Mobutu took a huge percent of the countries income and put the income in major debt.
