Robin Pearhill, RN, MHA, has a problem. One of his student interns is acting strangely, and Robin needs to act swiftly. Robin is the director of patient care at Atlantic Hills Treatment Center, a residential rehabilitation facility that treats adults recovering from alcohol and drug dependency. The center helps addicts and their families begin the recovery process. Robin worked at the center as a staff nurse for 12 years before he was promoted to director of patient care, a position he has held for two years. He is proud to be associated with the physicians, psychologists, counselors, and rehabilitation professionals who understand the recovery process and provide highly effective treatment in a caring and compassionate manner. The center also employs clinical psychology interns working toward their PhDs. Robin thoroughly enjoys mentoring these student employees. The residents have consented to the students' presence, and the staff appreciates their excellent work habits and enthusiasm. However, Robin is concerned about one of the psychology interns, Jay Brennecke. Jay is one of the brightest interns the center has ever employed, but recently he has been coming to work tardy, his notes on the residents have gotten sloppy, and he has been missing appointments. This morning, Robin noticed that Jay came to work with dilated pupils and was exhibiting hyperactive behavior. Robin immediately asked Jay to meet with him in his office, for he is concerned that Jay may have a substance abuse problem. Robin has worked with substance users for years now, and he prides himself on his diagnostic abilities. As a manager, Robin needs to decide what to do about Jay.
