Mark is preparing for a Zoom interview with a company to which he has applied. He wants to be comfortable for the interview, so he grabs his laptop, a cup of coffee, and settles into bed in his favorite t-shirt and sweatpants. A few minutes later, his laptop beeps and the Zoom screen pops up with the interviewer. Mark and the interviewer exchange introductions, and the interview begins. A minute later, Mark's dog begins barking loudly down the hall, which causes Mark to yell for it to be quiet. The interviewer then asks Mark a series of questions about why he wants to work for the company, what he enjoys most about the work he does, and so on. Mark suddenly cannot remember any of the answers he had come up with the night before, and when he nervously goes to take a sip of coffee, he spills it all over himself and curses out loud. Toward the end of the interview, Mark's laptop begins beeping loudly, indicating that it is running out of battery power. The interviewer asks what the beeping noise is. Mark replies that he does not hear anything, all while frantically searching for his laptop charger. A few seconds later, the laptop runs out of power, and the screen goes black. Mark stares at the blank screen before pulling the covers over his head and sinking deeper into bed. Questions to Consider 1. What do you think was Mark's most critical mistake during the interview? 2. What are some things Mark could have done differently when preparing for the interview? What about during the interview? 3. What do you think Mark's next move should be? 4. How are Zoom and video interviews similar to face-to-face interviews? How are they different?
