A cell transmission model is to be used to model the flow of traffic along a 150 metre length of highway immediately upstream of a traffic signal. The cells are all to be of length 25 metres The q K relationship is of trapezoidal form, with a freeflow speed of 60 kph, a jam density of 100 vehs/km and a capacity of 1800 vph that is achieved for values of the density k between 30 and 50 vehs/km. Express the sending and receiving functions using units of vehs/sec for q and vehs/cell for k, and sketch them. Al t = 0, the signals are on red and the states of the six cells are as shown in the table below, where the state of each cell is expressed in terms of its value of k (in vehs/cell). (Flow is from right to left). Cell k (vehs/cell) 1 2.5 2 2.0 3 1.5 4 1.1 5 0.6 6 0.25 Using an update interval of 1 sec, calculate the states of cells 1 to 5 al time t = 1 sec. Describe in general terms what one can expect to observe if the calculations were continued for further intervals whilst the signals remained on red.
