MATERIALS meter stick (a yard stick will work too) textbook PROCEDURE 1. Use the data table to record your measurements. 2. While you hold the 100-centimeter end of the meter stick, have your partner position his or her thumb and forefinger around the zero end. Make sure that your partner does not touch the meter stick. 3. Instruct your partner to concentrate on catching the meter stick as soon as you drop it. Your partner should move only the thumb and forefinger to catch the meter stick. 4. When you are ready, drop the meter stick between your partner's fingers. 5. Note the measurement on the meter stick at the point at which your partner's fingers caught the meter stick. Record this distance in centimeters in the data table. 6. Repeat steps 1 through 5 four more times. 7. To determine whether reaction rate is affected by distractions, select a chapter from your textbook that you have already studied. 9. Repeat steps 1 through 6, but this time ask your partner questions from the Chapter Review section at the end of the selected chapter as he/she tries to catch the meter stick.
