Part I

This project is considered in two parts. Each part has two research questions. In the first part, your research questions are provided for you, and it uses the data from the two files, East of MS River and West of MS River. In the second part, you are to make your own research questions based on the data in the file called Covid and Vaccine Data.

This project is to be formatted as a paper. Do not submit this as a list of answers to questions. Make sure to include the answers to the questions below.

Both parts will have the same setup, and need to have the same information, except that part II includes confidence intervals as well as hypothesis testing, while part I does not have the confidence intervals. Include the following bullets in each part, for each question.

  • Include discussion of Methodology and Research.
    • Methodology is where the data you use is from. For the first part, that is listed below. For the second, I got the data from a site by the CDC listing information about the actual pandemic cases in the US
    • Research is the background on why this study is important. For the first part, that is listed below, but do not copy/paste the information from that paragraph. Make it concrete to the reader. No need to mention what the column labels are, but describe what is meant by eastern and western states, and what type of data is provided. This includes when this data is from. For the second part, we have all lived through the past two and a half years. What has it meant to you. Everyone has a different story from all of this.
  • You will need to calculate descriptive statistics or exploratory data analysis like graphs, summary statistics, etc. This includes things like mean, standard deviation, sample size, and the like. Make sure you summarize your findings and discuss in the context of the problem. Describe the variability of the data.
  • Check that each set of data is approximately normally distributed. How do you check this? Remember what was done in homework. Don't forget to provide graphical evidence.
  • Perform a hypothesis testing analysis to answer the research questions involving the hypotheses described above. Make sure you follow all steps discussed in class and provide evidence of your work. (Use the P-value plot) Don't forget to make the hypotheses that you are testing from above into symbolical formats.
  • In part II, include a confidence interval for each question. Make sure to explain how it relates to the hypothesis testing, and how it verifies your decision in the hypothesis testing.
  • In both sections, discuss any further research ideas that you can think of, and any possible lurking variables that come to mind on each of the four hypothesis tests you ran. The further research ideas can include information that was not presented for this study. Think of what more you would like to look at in association with the type of data that was provided.

Research Background

In today's world, there is a new normal because of the novel coronavirus pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2020), "COVID-19 (2019 Novel Coronavirus) is a virus (more specifically, a coronavirus) identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China" (p. 1). The risk associated with this virus is devastating to workers in the frontline who are keeping the population safe. Full-time and part-time nurses often are the first contact patients have while entering hospitals or testing centers. Furthermore, the availability of beds becomes a critical component for patients' admission to hospitals. Prioritizing who gets a bed, makes a difficult decision for staff at hospitals and centers. You are asked to study the relationship between full-time nurses and the number of beds at hospitals at different geographic location in the United States to understand preparedness for this crisis. The data for this study provides information from the year 2012 to compare preparedness for a pandemic like COVID-19.

Methodology

The data for this study consists of a dataset from the Dartmouth Atlas Project, an affiliate of the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice. The data was divided into the following variables: Hospital Referral Regions (HRR), State, Resident Population, Acute Care Hospital Beds per 1,000 Residents (2012), Hospital-based Registered Nurses per 1,000 Residents (2012), and Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) Hospital Employees per 1,000 Residents (2012). The variable Acute Care Hospital Beds are hospital beds that are available for curative care with the intent to cure them from a disease or illness. These patients may be admitted for a longer period.

The variable Hospital-based Registered Nurse refers to registered nurses who are employed by the hospitals, and not by healthcare agencies outside the health system. The data consists of 308 cases. The study at hand is to investigate the relationship between western states and eastern states of the United States. Eastern states are the states east of the Mississippi River and western states are those west of the Mississippi River. The data is divided as such.

Research Questions and Hypotheses

Consider the following two research questions: RQ1) Do the number of acute care hospital beds per 1,000 residents in the western states compared to the eastern states differ? RQ2) Do the number of hospital-based registered nurses per 1,000 residents in the western states compared to the eastern states differ? The null and alternative hypotheses for each research question are below.

RQ1:

H0: There is no significant difference between the average number of acute care hospital beds per 1,000 residents in the western and eastern states

Ha: There is a significant difference between the average number of acute care hospital beds per 1,000 residents in the western and eastern states

RQ2:

H0: There is no significant difference between the number of hospital-based registered nurses per 1,000 residents in the western and eastern states

Ha: There is a significant difference between the number of hospital-based registered nurses per 1,000 residents in the western and eastern states.

Part II

2. Using the data COVID-19.csv create two testable hypotheses comparing average deaths by months. Make sure you have two research questions and associated research hypotheses for each. Keep in mind, since everyone who dies from Covid had to have first been diagnosed with it, comparing between two columns is not advisable for one hypothesis pair. But, pick time frames that make sense to compare. These don't need to be the same length of time, either.

Follow the steps discussed in class and provide evidence of your findings. You need to turn in a written executive summary (similar to Part I above) where you explain the background of the research, methodology, and results. Include 95% Confidence Intervals with explanations.

Research Background:

This one is the one you have lived through. Make a very quick overview of what you have seen in this, and how the pandemic affected your life, and even those around you.

Potential hypothesis comparisons for part II:

For the most part, I suggest staying within the same column.

  • Compare number of deaths over some months with number of deaths per day over other months.
  • Same with cases, recoveries, or even 14 day cumulative cases
  • Use a time series plot of one of the columns to choose parts to compare. Maybe ones that look similar, but you want to check.
  • One way you can safely cross columns is to compare number of deaths and number of recoveries in one time period or another. Since everyone either recovers or dies, it is a safe comparison to make.
