MEN HAVE BETTER MATHEMATICAL ABILITY THAN WOMEN Larry Summers Harvard, was forced to resign from his post
Question:
MEN HAVE BETTER MATHEMATICAL ABILITY THAN WOMEN
Larry Summers Harvard, was forced to resign from his post as president of the University by claim that women have different skills than men, but there is some truth in the affirmation. Reliable evidence indicates significant gender differences in tests in mathematics. There are certainly many, many women whose mathematical prowess and scientific far exceeds that of many men. Distributions overlap by one degree considerable.
It is also true that most research shows that general intelligence does not differ between the sexes: women are just as smart as men. But the fact of the matter is, the way in that men and women are intelligent, on average, differ. Women tend to have significantly higher scores on measures of verbal ability and men tend to have significantly higher scores on measures of mathematical ability. many sociologists and educational psychologists argue that these differences are explained by socialization: Boys are socialized towards and rewarded for math prowess while girls they are aiming for and expect to excel in writing and reading. These socialization arguments, however, ignore some cold and hard truths that have been discovered in the latest research. We know from neural imaging research that the men and women's brains are different. Men tend to show a higher activation in the area of the brain responsible for mathematics and spatial operations. the women, on the other hand, tend to have better bilateral communication (the right and left sides of your brain communicate better), which is vital for reading comprehension and written expression and oral. Do we really think a child's third-grade teacher made these differences?
No reasonable person suggests that children should be directed into different occupations based on these findings. Men and women must pursue the occupations that suit to your abilities and you will find it rewarding. But if our quest for egalitarianism blinds us of scientific conclusions suggesting the obvious: Are men and women not exactly Equal?
Point against
Women make up half of the new businesses in the legal, medical and dentistry. They are the vast majority of veterinarians. However, they are still unfortunately underrepresented in the sciences, mathematics and the positions of technology. For example, only one in five of the last participants in the The women's graduate studies are women and in the natural sciences and computer science departments of the better universities, less than one in ten tenured professors are women. If women are they find at a disadvantage for example in terms of skills in mathematics and science why are they better represented in some occupations than in others? Divergent motivations produced by the teacher and the expectations of the parents are the answer. If we think that women are not Natural engineers, then we learn to lead girls out of the options of those careers.
It is true that there are gender differences in math test scores, but the differences are not great. And often ignoring it is a widely documented phenomenon: Among the younger, girls outperform boys on math (as well as other) tests. In the adolescence, this advantage is reversed and boys outperform girls. If socialization and the Experience at school do not explain this result, what does it?
On the other hand, we know that a large part of the reason why few women enter science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM positions) is not skill but motivation. the research indicates that women perceive careers in STEM fields because they are less satisfactorily interpersonal and this explains its gravitation towards other fields. If we are concerned about gender differences in participation in these fields, we have to be concerned with the motivational effects of these perceptions, not with the alleged differences in the abilities or abilities between men and women.
