Mental illness differs in populations based on their race and culture. According to the American Psychiatric Association, people of two or more races reported having the second highest reported mental illnesses in 2015 at 46%. It was also reported that people who identified as transgender ranked the highest (30.8%) for suicide attempt consideration. These numbers are so high based on lack of access to health care, decreased financial stability, stigma, and discrimination, and "Lack of cultural understanding by health care providers may contribute to underdiagnosis and/or misdiagnosis of mental illness in people from racially/ethnically diverse populations" (American Psychiatric Association, 2017). An example of this is the LGBTQ population. Their sexual orientation or how they identify their gender is not a mental health issue; however, the lack of healthcare they receive and the social isolation they endure are large contributing factors to depression, anxiety, and antisocial personality disorder. Are there any other stigmas this population faces? What can be done to help this population?
