Merck Research Labs conducted an experiment to evaluate the effect of a new drug using the Single-T swim maze. Six impregnated dam rats were captured and allocated a dosage of 12.5 milligrams of the drug. One male and one female pup were randomly selected from each resulting litter to perform in the swim maze. Each rat pup is placed in water at one end of the maze and allowed to swim until it successfully escapes at the opposite end. If the rat pup fails to escape after a certain period of time, it is placed at the beginning end of the maze and given another attempt to escape.
