At the federal level, district court judges, circuit court judges, and supreme court justices are all appointed -- nominated by the president and then confirmed by the senate. Once sorwn in, there is no term limit and no mandatory retirement age.

The only way to rermove a federal judge is by impeachment, which has very rarely been done. Of course, some federal judges do voluntarily retire. Yet, others have died in offices.

However, when it comes to state court judges, the picture is more complicated.Judical selection varies among the states. Some states have appointed judges while others have various types of judicial elections.
