Metric rules are read the same as decimal$-$inch rules, but the units have

different names. To read a metric rule, follow these steps:

Study the major divisions which are in centimeters $($cm$)$: $1,2,$

$3$ and on to $9$ cm $.$

Each centimeter is divided into $10$ millimeters $($ mm $)$ along one

edge of the rule and into $\frac{1}{2}$ millimeters $(20$ divisions$)$ along the

other. $(1$ cm equals $10$ mm or $\frac{201}{2}mm).$

For a reading of $37$ millimeters, start at zero, move to the major

division marked $3(3$ centimeters $=30$ millimeters$),$ on to the

mid$-$division mark representing $35$ and count $2$ additional

divisions which represents $37$ millimeters.
