Question:
Milton Friedman said that managers of corporations owe the shareholders single-minded focus on increasing profits. John Mackey says the purpose should be broadened to various "stakeholders" in the business. Does a manager, even the CEO, have the biblical authority to act counter to the interests and demands of the owners? Serving stakeholders--such as, employees, customers, suppliers, etc.--sounds like something that would please God. Perhaps there doesn't need to be a tradeoff between profits and serving stakeholders. Could it be that serving stakeholders maximizes profits?
