Instructions

Refer to the Mini Case Study 2 Instructions of this case study. You may also wish to review the Mini Case Study 2 Rubric which identifies the criteria used to evaluate your assignment. Although this is a memo format you will probably need 3-5 pages for this assignment.

You will present a staffing plan, a training proposal, and a total rewards proposal. Although this is in a memo format, you will probably need 5 or more pages to finish this assignment. Last week we looked at Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). This week we look further into the staffing (recruitment and hiring process) requested by the CEO.

Mechanics:

For this and all other written assignments that follow in the course, except for assignment 3 in week 4, after being informed by the reading material for the week and taking the self-assessment, you will demonstrate your knowledge via a memo to the CEO. In the memo, use in-text citations and a reference page including at least 3 academic or professionally credible sources (not Wikipedia or Indeed), preferably from our course material. Use topic headings to distinguish each section of the memo. If topic headings are not included, deductions will be taken. Topic headings guide the author of the memo to help ensure all elements of the assignment are included and helps to focus the individual receiving the memo on the key points. Any approved writing style format such as MLA, APA, Chicago style may be used. This link may be a useful source:UMGC's library guidance on citations.

Elements of the memo:

  • Academic title page
  • Date, To, From, and Subject of the memo
  • Introduction/purpose (why you are writing the memo)
  • Analysis of the position being filled

In this section, share with the CEO how you will analyze the position that needs to be filled and how you will decide the compensation plus exempt/non-exempt status for it. Explain to the CEO what the related compliance is needed of employment laws, requirements, and other practices. It may be helpful to recall that a job analysis is typically required to create a job description (which is a listing of responsibilities), job specification (which is a listing of knowledge, skills, and abilities) and job evaluation (which is a comparison of the position's value to others of similar value in the organization), and a market analysis (which is external to the organization to learn what others are paying for a similar position). Share with the CEO what questions can be asked of the applicants and which ones should not be asked.

  • Staffing plan presented in a chart format

In this section, present your staffing plan in a sequential and concise manner in a simple project management task list or a Gantt Chart (see samples attached). Recall that staffing is a broader set of tasks than just the one step of hiring. Staffing includes the actual hiring of the new employee but there are many more steps in the process before and after the individual is hired. Provide the basic steps you will take to staff the position beginning with the analysis and concluding with the hiring, on-boarding, and training. Deductions will be taken if a chart is not used. Most likely you will include the use of the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) from last week's assignment.

  • Proposal for training the new hire

Describe to the CEO your evaluation (the pros and cons) of three different training methods and suggest from the three, the most effective method to use for the new position. Examples of training methods are found in our reading material. Metrics and learning objectives are always relevant for evaluating the effectiveness of the training so you may want to mention those.

  • Recommendation of a total rewards package

Share with the CEO the general concepts of a total rewards strategy since he may not be familiar. In this section, also explain to the CEO how you will decide the pay, benefits, and other rewards for the position and what you feel should be included.
