What biological traits, personality traits or other characteristics do you think are necessary qualities of an effective leader?
"An admired and common trait among outstanding leaders is humility. A humble leader is inspiring and helps to bring out the best in others" (Boerma, et., 2017). To be an effective leader I think that there are many necessary qualities needed such as being an effective listener and communicator, being open to criticism/feedback and using that feeding back to correct and change and allow yourself to grow. I also think it's important to have compassion and show empathy towards others. Boerma, et. (2017) also stated that "Leaders are born with certain core traits that through situations and training foster them into becoming outstanding leaders" (Page 4).
What biological traits, personality traits or other characteristics have you discovered in your own practice as a professional that will make you an effective leader?
Some of the traits that I have discovered I possess are that I am a very good listener, I can take the feedback or criticism I am given and turn around and improve my practices and grow from mistakes if I have made them. I have also discovered that if I put forth the strategies that I have acquired over the years that I am a pretty good problem solver. Most importantly I think that I have learned to put myself in other shoes and see things from a different perspective.
What leadership characteristics do you need to learn to improve through real-world experience?
I think that the leadership characteristics that I need to learn to improve through real-world experience is to be able to step out of my comfort zone and challenge myself. I know everyone has their way of doing things and sometimes it's ok to change that up and take other's ideas or advice, it doesn't mean you're doing it wrong it just means there maybe other ways and even easier or less stressful ways of doing things or another aspect of looking at it is to volunteer to take on more responsibilities to go above and beyond of what is asked of me.
