M4D1: Gathering Data
Discussion Topic
Let's plan to gather data.
In this discussion, you'll be exploring data gathering by designing a plan and critiquing plans for the apps for prototype. The goal of the data gathering is to find out what users like/dislike about existing tools and compare those interfaces with a prototype of the tool. Your work here will be to design the data gathering for one of the apps for prototype. In this discussion, you'll post an original entry that presents a plan for data gathering for one of the apps and you'll participate in a discussion exploring the suggested plans for that app along with at least one other app.
As you work through this activity, keep in mind that your purpose is to explore how to gather data for different contexts.
Step 1: Design a plan
Select one of the apps for prototype (which app you select for this activity doesn't impact which app you end up working with in the next steps of the project).
Explain the context for the data gathering (what is the app, who uses it, from whom are you gathering data)
What method(s) would you choose to gather data? (interviews, focus groups, questionnaires) And why are these suited to what you want to get?
What are the benefits of using the method(s)? What are the drawbacks? (be sure to consider a range of issues from resources required to reliability of the data)
What methodological and ethical issues should be considered when selecting the participants and methods?
How would you administer the data collection method(s)?(in-person event, telephone, online)
-What type of data would you gather and how would you analyze that data?
Step 2: Critique and work to improve plans
In this discussion, you'll explore methods of gathering data. So, for your responses, you should think about (and address)
Is the method is well-suited for the context? Would the method change if the context were different? Similarly, are the identified participants appropriate and realistic for the context?
-What are the drawbacks of the plan?
-What might you add or change about the plan?
Please post an original entry for your chosen case study, read what others have to say, and remember to respond to two other people's postings.
