Module 4 Assignment: Outlining Instructions In this assignment, you will be reviewing and organizing the substantive law covered in the course thus far (battery in Module 2, assault in Module 3, and false imprisonment in this Module 4) and creating your own outline of these three subjects. Although you are submitting your outline for a grade and feedback, ultimately, your outline is your personal study tool. It is the process of developing and refining the outline that will help you memorize the rules and provide you with the substantive understanding necessary to tackle exam questions. Your outline should be a distillation of the rules and cases that you have covered in the class, and it should help you learn the law and how the law is applied. In creating your outline, you should use actual cases and hypothetical fact patterns (perhaps ones that you have created) to illustrate points of law. Once you have completed your outline, a good way to test its usefulness is to try answering a few practical questions using your outline. Tips for creating your outline: 1. Refer to your textbook table of contents for the big picture. 2. Do not simply write a list of everything you have learned; use outline headings (I., A., 1., etc.) to illustrate how your topics relate to each other. 3. Organize your outline logically according to torts, rules, and elements, as well as sub-rules or sub-issues, as applicable. 4. Insert cases and hypotheticals selectively when you need examples of how to apply the rules in your outline. 5. Make your outline useful: summarize and distill key rules and illustrations, don't include class notes verbatim or paste in case briefs in full. This assignment is due at the end of Module 4 and is worth 60 points. Assignments must be submitted as one Word document.
