Introduction:
This assignment follows up on our lecture discussion about Powerful Forces and their impact on any organization, including service organizations.
Powerful Forces are beyond the control of the organization and if not addressed or exploited can have serious negative impacts on the organization.
Businesses need to pay attention to these forces or lose their competitive advantage or relevance. For example, with respect to Social Changes, the growing acceptance of alternative and social lifestyles is a recent powerful force that has caused organizations to rethink their marketing and operational practices towards the LGBTQ community.
Another example might be Government Policies/Legislation Market Forces that often have significant impacts on organizations because of the various government policies regarding the environment and the use of plastics and types of packaging materials. Another is legislation regarding food ingredients, and nutritional information disclosure for restaurants.
This assignment requires that you select a service organization, preferably in the tourism or hospitality sector, and do some basic research to determine how one of the five Powerful Forces has impacted this organization.
Questions:
1. Select an actual service company related to, or in the tourism or hospitality and, in your own words, briefly describe what the organization does. This should be a maximum of 1-2 sentences. Do not copy and paste from the organizations website and please do not go through company history (when founded, who founded, where its located, personnel, etc. that information is irrelevant to this assignment). Just describe in your own words what the company does, and the services provided. (2 marks)
2. Review the five powerful forces we discussed in class and select just ONE of the 5 Powerful Market Forces that you are interested in. Then do some research on how that specific force has had an impact on the organization that you selected.
Be specific about the type of powerful force (dont just list Social Changes for example, also identify the specific area of Social Changes less family time, changing population demographics, lifestyle etc.).
Then identify the significant impact(s) that this powerful force has had on the organization recently/or in the past 5 years or you think might have an impact in the future.
Provide any relevant background and/or context. For example, if you choose Social Changes as the Powerful Market Force, then what is the background about immigration, or rising consumer expectations, or the increasing number of women in senior executive positions in business that makes this a possible opportunity or threat to the organization that you selected. (see class notes).
Then describe the specific impact/affect that this has had on the organization that you selected and its operations. Make sure to provide an example of the impact and RELATE it to the organization you selected. (12 marks)
3. Proper grammar, spelling, using template below, punctuation, proper APA/MLA citations for any research sources used. (4 marks)
