My question is from here PHARMACEUTICAL ANALYSIS
PHARMACEUTICAL ANALYSIS 1 LABORATORY ACTIVITY No. 5 PREPARATION AND STANDARDIZATION OF 0.1 N POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE OBJECTIVES: 1. To prepare and standardize 0.1 N potassium permanganate solution for the assay of hydrogen peroxide solution. 2. To appreciate the significance of preparing standard solutions. DISCUSSION: Oxidation reduction methods of analysis involve a change in valence of the reacting substance. Oxidation reduction reaction is one which electrons are transferred from one reactant to another. Some of the oxidizing agents are Ferric ammonium sulfate, potassium permanganate, potassium dichromate, potassium bromate, potassium iodate, potassium ferricyanide, ceric sulfate, iodine and bromine. KMnO, solution should be stand for 2 days to ensure completion of the decomposition reaction. Filtered through asbestos or ceramic sulfate or sintered glass crucible to remove all the traces of MnO., which if present will act as a catalyst to promote the formation of more MnO. at the expense of permanganate ion. Sodium oxalate is the best primary standard to be used in the standardization of KMnO, since it can be obtained in pure form. In the permanganate method of analysis, the KMnQ, solution can be standardized easily, retains its concentration over a long period of time, rapidly reacts in the process and serves as indicator. The KMnO, solution is prepared as directed which will retain its value for a long time if it is protected from sunlight and from entry of organic matter. Sulfuric acid must be added to keep the hydrogen-ion concentration reasonably constant throughout the titration, thereby preventing the formation of MnQ,. MATERIALS : Potassium permanganate crystals Reagent grade Sodium oxalate, Na,C,0, Gooch crucible with asbestos mat Sulfuric acid, C.P. PROCEDURE: Dissolve about 0.70 g of potassium permanganate in 200 ml of distilled water in flask and boil the solution for about 15 minutes. Stopper the flask and allow the solution to stand for at least 2 days, and then filter it through asbestos in gooch crucible. Standardize the solution as follows: (2 trials) Weigh accurately about 100 mg of sodium oxalate previously dried at 110 C to constant weight and dissolve it in 100 ml of distilled water in a beaker. Add 5 ml of sulfuric acid, heat to about 70C and then slowly add the permanganate solution from a buret with constant stirring until a pale pink color which persists for 15 seconds is produced. The temperature of the solution conclusion of the titration should not less than 60C. Calculate the normality of the solution
