My study will use a generic qualitative inquiry (GQI) methodology to explore the child-free employees equity perceptions of their employers benefit plans and HR work-life programs. A key element of qualitative research is its focus on understanding how people make sense of their experiences and how those experiences relate to how people construct meaning interrelated to themselves, others, social situations, and world occurrences. Guided by the projects central question: What are the child-free employees equity perceptions of their employers benefit plans and human resource work-life programs GQI will help provide insight into the child-free employees external subjective attitudes, actions, ideas, and beliefs. The generic approach is especially appropriate for this dissertation as the methodology provides flexibility and openness to research In short, allowing for a better understanding of what child-free employees think about their organization's benefit plans and HR work-life programs.

Ethnography, grounded theory, case studies, and phenomenology are some examples of valid study designs used in qualitative research . However, for a variety of reasons, the subject, linking problem, and research question for this study are incompatible with the specified conventional procedures. First, the study does not seek to comprehend organizational culture; thus, ethnography is omitted. Second, the research does not encourage the objective development of theory, which is the purpose of grounded theory research. Third, a case study approach is inadequate because this study's goal is not to provide in-depth knowledge of a particular event or activity as experienced by one or a few individuals. Finally, phenomenology is improper since the research strives to understand the pre-reflective conscious or "lived" (internalized) psychological experiences as opposed to actual opinions or the external, real-world environment that is observed in GQI research.
