Question:
Ndeshimona was a 25-year woman who was in the growth stage of career development. She was in her second year at university where she was studying nursing. Ndeshi was the first person in her traditional family to attend university. Her father and mother were extremely supportive of her wish to obtain a university degree. However, because of Ndeshi’s parents’ lack of university education experience, they were not in a position to Ndeshi advice and direction regarding the educational process.
Nevertheless. Ndeshi was aware that career counseling and academic advising services were available at the university, so she met with a career counselor to begin that process. One of the first things that Ndeshi talked about was her decision to specialize in nursing.
She explained to her career counselor that she originally decided Electrical Engineering would be a good avenue to pursue because there appeared to be a lot of available nursing jobs in Namibia. It was very clear rather quickly, however, that Ndeshi was not really interested in a career in nursing. She wanted to find a specialist in nursing that would be appropriate for her. As Ndeshi continued meeting with her career counselor, it became clear she was still forming some general attitudes about work and was learning about her self-concept.
Although she had not yet begun the actual career exploration process, she was ready and willing to engage in exploratory activities. Her willingness to take the time and expend the effort to make an effect career decision proved helpful. Today Ndeshi is employed as a paediatric nurse.
