Hello,
I selected scenario number two of the five scenarios in Chapter 19.7, "Group Exercise: Diversity Dilemmas."
2. Jack is a married man, while John is single. Your company has an assignment in a branch in Mexico that would last a couple of years. Management feels that John would be better for this assignment because he is single and is free to move. Is this decision fair?
Despite Jack being a married man, he deserves a fair and equal opportunity for the assignment in Mexico. Yes, on the outside it does appear that John would be the best option for the assignment due to him being single and free to move but the company is in the wrong for not offering the position to Jack and not even asking him if he would be willing or able to move to Mexico. Based on the company's decision, they lacked the necessary communication skills of fairness within the work environment, didn't model successful or positive working behavior, possibly broke company policy, and most importantly the company failed by not having mutual respect and understanding towards Jack's relationship status. In order to manage the situation and avoid any conflicts between the company and Jack, it would be best to have a meeting with Jack and the management to explain their decision while offering the assignment to him.
