3. MAGNETIC FORCE ON A WIRE Now consider placing a wire along the xaxis in the external magnetic eld dened in 2(b). The wire has constant linear charge density and current I. (a) Take an innitesimal slice of the wire which contains charge dq and determine the magnetic force acting on that slice, assuming this charge is moving at constant velocity v in order to give rise to the total current I. (b) In your expression for the magnetic force, substitute v = dx/dt and rewrite your expression by using the fact that I = dq/dr = constant throughout the wire. Integrate this expression over the length L of the wire to obtain a general expression for the magnetic force acting on a current carrying wire
