This is because the voltmeter has a high internal resistance and little current is drawn through the voltmeter ER-LOAD 120 Ohms voltmeter circuit. Call this reading Vo; this will be equal to the EMF of the battery for zero current. The proper way to check the battery is to test it "under load", i.e. by requiring that significant current comes out of the battery terminals. This is done with a load resistor. (a) For a battery in good working order, the terminal voltage is near the stated EMF of 12V. Find the current through a 120 0 load resistor, and (b) calculate the power dissipated in the load. This is required for you to select a load resistor with sufficient power rating. (c) Show that under load, the battery internal resistance is given by: Tine Vo - Vload Road Vo (c) A particular 12V battery is considered bad if Ving, is less than 10V under these testing conditions.
