The one thing these authors both agree on is that technology has changed the way we think. Carr's main argument is that although we like to believe having technology gives us greater access to all of this information, it really is a hinderance to us or at minimum creating different issues. Carr focuses on how attention spans are shorter because we essentially don't have to work so hard to find out the information we want. I know that this is something I have spoken about with my friends. A great example is with TikTok and your "FYP". TikTok has now made it so videos are able to be 3 minutes long. If I find a video interetsing I am able to watch it all the way through so longer videos still show up on my FYP. My friend on the other hand loses interest and never sees 3 minute videos on her page. Thompson on the other hand makes an argument that being in the public eye with our writing shapes the thought and effort that we put into it. I do find this to be an interesting discussion. I don't think this is something that people originally thought about as technology and social media developed. We have seen it play out now that old posts have come back to have negative effects on people making people much more aware of what they share on the internet. Another thing that I have specifically thought about with this course is how I spend a lot more time thinking about and constructing these discussion posts than if I was just going to raise my hand and speak in class. When I saw Carr's article headline, I couldn't see how Google may be turning us foolish. However, I grew to agree with several of his points of view. I agree with what the author said: "My mind isn't going so far as I can tell -but it's changing". I feel that we depend far too heavily on the digital world if it is for talking with others via social media, text, audio, video calls, or even reading books. Rarely do we see people visiting the library to conduct research using a physical copy of the books and magazines. The author presents a compelling argument for how the internet has altered how we think and learn. The digital services provide a global venue for the exchange of ideas, hastening the development of new ideas and the growth of global knowledge. It has made it possible for customers to interact and share ideas. He contends that since we are communicating more now than ever before, using the digital world may be to society.
