Mainfreight in Global Expansion Mode Mainfreight has bought out its partners in China and is conducting due diligence on an American freight forwarder with a view to boosting its presence on lucrative trade routes between Asia and North America. "The emphasis now is on becoming a recognised player in the international logistics market, positioned to move freight between countries on the world's major trade lanes," Mainfreight managing director Don Braid told the company's annual meeting in Auckland yesterday. "You can expect to see this company double in size over the next three to five years." The fast-growing transport and logistics company paid $9.5 million to become the 100 per cent owner of its China business, which has operations in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Ningbo. Mr Braid said the move would allow Mainfreight to pursue a more aggressive growth strategy and make it easier to merge its Chinese operations with acquisitions it was hoping to make in the United States. "China is an important part of our growth strategy around the world, particularly between China and the US and China and Europe. "They are probably the two biggest freight markets around, and the businesses that we're interested in, in the US, have quite a lot of customers that are now manufacturing in China for the US market. "We want to be able to grow that side of our business more aggressively." In the US, Mainfreight had made an offer, subject to the completion of due diligence, on three companies, Mr Braid said. Regardless, what really matters is customers want to do business with Mainfreight because the person they talk to on the phone says yes or no, Ill make that happen, not Ill have to ask permission. He says, that if you think about it from a commercial point of view, thats a big part of Mainfreights why, and why customers want to do business with the company.
