Guidelines for Critique of Ageism and Future Cohorts of Elderly Journal Article

Step 1. Readthe article thoroughly. Make notes; highlight important points. (Be sure that you have an article, not a book review or abstract of an article).

Step 2. Make a summary of the article. What are the author's main points? What does he use to prove his points? Make sure that your reader (the instructor) can understand the topic and discussion of the author.

Step 3. Begin to critique/analyze the article. Answer the following:

What is the purpose of the article?

What does he/she want to prove?

Who is the author's intended audience?

What does the author use to support his position/argument/stand?

What are the author's assumptions or biases?

Step 4. Begin to evaluate the text.

Does the author present a logical position?

Is the text east to read?

Does the author seem to present factual information?

Do the arguments support the main ideas?

Is the text appropriate for intended audience?

Does the author explain or define key terms?

Is the text logical and consistent?

Does the text refute opposing views?

Does the author give you a clear understanding of the topic?

What questions does the article raise for you? What is your response to this article? What did you learn?

In conclusion, do you agree or disagree with the author? Give several statements as the basis for your decision.

Step 5. Write the summary and critique.
